The Flash office is buzzing with excitement over this week’s latest launch – the Karisma collection, a beautiful henna-inspired collection benefiting The Miracle Foundation. For our second collaboration with this incredible non-profit, we teamed up with Brit babe Olivia-Fayne – the super talented artist behind the gorgeous and intricate tattoo designs from her namesake business ‘Olivia-Fayne Tattoo Design’ – to co-design this exclusive pack. Today, we’d like to introduce you to the gal behind the pen and paper with a little q & a!
How did you get your start designing tattoos?
It started off as a hobby, I drew the design for my own tattoo as I wanted to create something totally original that only I had. I posted it on Instagram and from that a few people got in touch asking if I could design one for them. Over time, things just continued to grow naturally until it became a legitimate business.
Each of your designs are totally custom. Walk us through what that process looks like.
Customers start by sending their visions and ideas, including anything they would like the design to represent. Once I have this initial brief, I aim to bring the idea to life as a piece uniquely deigned for them as an individual. I start with a rough pencil version which is sent over to the customer to check out. Then, if they are happy, I finalize the design as an ink version. If any amends are requested, then I do those at this stage and we work together to get the design perfected. No design is created the same, they are one of a kind specifically made for the client!
People are often surprised to know that not all of us gals on the Flash team have permanent ink! Tell us a little bit about the tattoos that you have.
I’ve always wanted original pieces/designs for myself, so I just began designing ideas that I personally really liked. Each piece I’ve created at different stages but I always try to design new tattoos that compliment the others around it. I’m currently looking to add to the ones on my right arm by designing something for the bits in-between the current ones to link all of the designs as one, I don’t know what that will be yet but I guess time will tell!
Who would your dream celebrity client be to design a tattoo for?
I’d have to say Rihanna, mainly because her tattoo styles are similar to mine. I love her recent Puma ‘creepers’ collab! Rihanna, if you’re reading this, hit me up…let’s make some new special edition ones! 😉
What are your fave places to find inspiration?
I often use an app called We Heart It – for anyone who’s not heard of it, it’s a little like Pinterest/Instagram. It’s basically an image bank full of amazing ideas/images/photos etc and it’s a great place to get me in the mood for drawing and designing. It’s sometimes quite hard to just sit down and start drawing from scratch…all designers will tell you sometimes you get ‘artistic block’ and just need to find some inspiration to spark things. We Heart It and Instagram are great sources of inspiration for me to light the fuse and kick start my drawings.
So, fun fact that people might not know ….we actually ‘met’ on Instagram! What Insta feeds are you especially loving lately?
I’m constantly scrolling through my Insta feed (on an almost unhealthy level) ha ha! But there’s so much amazing work out there. Social media has his good points and bad points, the downside is that my work is constantly being copied without my consent, but the flip side is it has provided me with a platform to showcase what I can do, something that would have taken years without this new world of instant connection. There’s a few that I follow closely, be it individuals or larger companies:
On the homeware side, I love Anthropologie (@anthropologie). I’m currently working on a homeware collection and for me to work with these guys would be a dream!
Alex Bawn (@alexbawntattoo) is one of my favorite tattooists to follow, and more than capable of bringing my designs to life. She’s top of my list to recommend when people ask me for suggestions of good tattooists.
Minnie Mcgee (@minniemcgeeart) is actually a friend of mine who creates some amazing stippling based designs, her prints are awesome!
I recently found out about a Ian Berry (@ianberry.art) away from Instagram (he lives in my apartment). He designs pieces using only denim. It’s a really niche and unique concept and he’s insanely talented and def worth checking out!
Being a busy gal with a long list of clients to design for, we imagine you’re always on the go. What are a few items you never leave home without?
So I’m pretty forgetful (I think that’s part and parcel of having the ‘design’ gene) but when I can remember, I always take my pens and a pad to scribble ideas down. Hair bobble is a must, I cant seem to create with my hair down (imagine “Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events” – just like Violet, ideas seem to come to me once my hair is out of the way!). Kalms tablets which help my anxiety and a pair of headphones so everything has a soundtrack to it. I hate silence!
Thanks for giving us a glimpse into your fab life, Olivia! Be sure to follow her to stay up to date the with her latest happenings, inspirations and projects!
