The Flash office is buzzing with excitement over this week’s latest launch – the Karisma collection, a beautiful henna-inspired collection benefiting The Miracle Foundation. For our second collaboration with this incredible non-profit, we teamed up with Brit babe Olivia-Fayne – the super talented artist behind the gorgeous and intricate tattoo designs from her namesake business ‘Olivia-Fayne Tattoo Design’ – to co-design this exclusive pack.  Today, we’d like to introduce you to the gal behind the pen and paper with a little q & a!

How did you get your start designing tattoos?
It started off as a hobby, I drew the design for my own tattoo as I wanted to create something totally original that only I had. I posted it on Instagram and from that a few people got in touch asking if I could design one for them. Over time, things just continued to grow naturally until it became a legitimate business.

Each of your designs are totally custom. Walk us through what that process looks like.
Customers start by sending their visions and ideas, including anything they would like the design to represent. Once I have this initial brief, I aim to bring the idea to life as a piece uniquely deigned for them as an individual. I start with a rough pencil version which is sent over to the customer to check out. Then, if they are happy, I finalize the design as an ink version. If any amends are requested, then I do those at this stage and we work together to get the design perfected. No design is created the same, they are one of a kind specifically made for the client!

People are often surprised to know that not all of us gals on the Flash team have permanent ink! Tell us a little bit about the tattoos that you have.
I’ve always wanted original pieces/designs for myself, so I just began designing ideas that I personally really liked. Each piece I’ve created at different stages but I always try to design new tattoos that compliment the others around it. I’m currently looking to add to the ones on my right arm by designing something for the bits in-between the current ones to link all of the designs as one, I don’t know what that will be yet but I guess time will tell!

Who would your dream celebrity client be to design a tattoo for?
I’d have to say Rihanna, mainly because her tattoo styles are similar to mine. I love her recent Puma ‘creepers’ collab! Rihanna, if you’re reading this, hit me up…let’s make some new special edition ones! 😉

What are your fave places to find inspiration?
I often use an app called We Heart It – for anyone who’s not heard of it, it’s a little like Pinterest/Instagram. It’s basically an image bank full of amazing ideas/images/photos etc  and it’s a great place to get me in the mood for drawing and designing. It’s sometimes quite hard to just sit down and start drawing from scratch…all designers will tell you sometimes you get ‘artistic block’ and just need to find some inspiration to spark things. We Heart It and Instagram are great sources of inspiration for me to light the fuse and kick start my drawings. :)

So, fun fact that people might not know ….we actually ‘met’ on Instagram! What Insta feeds are you especially loving lately?
I’m constantly scrolling through my Insta feed (on an almost unhealthy level) ha ha! But there’s so much amazing work out there. Social media has his good points and bad points, the downside is that my work is constantly being copied without my consent, but the flip side is it has provided me with a platform to showcase what I can do, something that would have taken years without this new world of instant connection. There’s a few that I follow closely, be it individuals or larger companies:

On the homeware side, I love Anthropologie (@anthropologie). I’m currently working on a homeware collection and for me to work with these guys would be a dream!

Alex Bawn (@alexbawntattoo) is one of my favorite tattooists to follow, and more than capable of bringing my designs to life. She’s top of my list to recommend when people ask me for suggestions of good tattooists.

Minnie Mcgee (@minniemcgeeart) is actually a friend of mine who creates some amazing stippling based designs, her prints are awesome!

I recently found out about a Ian Berry (@ianberry.art) away from Instagram (he lives in my apartment). He designs pieces using only denim. It’s a really niche and unique concept and he’s insanely talented and def worth checking out!

Being a busy gal with a long list of clients to design for, we imagine you’re always on the go. What are a few items you never leave home without?
So I’m pretty forgetful (I think that’s part and parcel of having the ‘design’ gene) but when I can remember, I always take my pens and a pad to scribble ideas down. Hair bobble is a must, I cant seem to create with my hair down (imagine “Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events” – just like Violet, ideas seem to come to me once my hair is out of the way!). Kalms tablets which help my anxiety and a pair of headphones so everything has a soundtrack to it. I hate silence!

Thanks for giving us a glimpse into your fab life, Olivia! Be sure to follow her to stay up to date the with her latest happenings, inspirations and projects!

It’s with great pleasure that we introduce you to the talented and crazy cool gal behind Penheartspaper, Sarah Staunton. She’s the artistic gem of a person who we collaborated with to create our latest collection, Wanderlust. We sat down with this Bondi-based babe for a little q & a sesh, and felt totally inspired afterwards. Hope you enjoy the mini interview with the latest lady to join the Flash family! xo

Tell us a little about yourself and your background. What influences have they had on your work?

I’m Australian born and bred, and was super blessed to grow up on the beautiful beaches of the Central Coast NSW. So I mostly find myself drawn to and moved by the beautiful big blue ocean. The ocean always recharges my batteries and gives me a fresh new space to explore new inspiration. I currently live at Bondi Beach, 300 metres from Bondi Icebergs – so I am still always by the sea. I have had my fair share of doubt and hardship thrown my way too; all lessons which have taught and encouraged me to connect with and share my emotions, which I hope shines through in the pieces I create.

As a type illustrator, words are a big part of your work. If you had to choose one word to describe yourself, what would it be and why?
Connector. There is nothing more in this world I love more than connecting. Whether it’s with people, moments or stories… Connecting allows me to feel, grow, and share.

Confession: we did some insta-stalking, and we’re obsessed. Would you consider your page more of a diary or inspiration?
Haha thank you! I don’t think I can pick just one of those though. I definitely use my Instagram account to catalogue my thoughts, feelings, and moments – but I equally use it as a form of inspiration; either to inspire those who see my posts, or to be inspired by those who engage with me and my work.

The best thing I ever ate was _____.
Raspberries and cream at one of the local restaurants back home, Bombini. There’s a lot more to it than it seems. It’s made of cream, with some sort of soft meringue foam on top, Raspberry sorbet, some sort of orange dusting and Prosecco jelly – holy moly!

What would you tell your 10-year-old self about the future Sarah?
I would say “Don’t worry about that nasty teacher telling you off about your rebellious handwriting style and withholding your pen license from you – one day you will make a living out of your non-basic handwriting. Yes, handwriting.”

Where do you find the best creative inspiration?
For me the best creative inspiration is found whilst traveling – everything is new; sounds, smells, scenery, people, conversations, ideals, traditions, necessities. Sometimes I’m so inspired I get overwhelmed and don’t how to work with all of it.
If you could pack your bags and visit anywhere in the world for a week, where would you go?
Morocco! The food, the textures, the land, the colours – the list goes on! It’s been at the top of my list for a couple of years now.
What’s your favourite thing to do on a day when you have nothing to do?
I really like getting out of the ‘Bondi Bubble’ and going for a drive. I’ll usually drive up the coast to Avoca where my Mum lives, lay a blanket on the grass outside and soak up the sun. And pray that I don’t get bitten by a green ant!

You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What colour would you be and why?
White! White is light, white has endless opportunities for growth, white is the purest platform for every other colour to shine from, and with a white crayon you can write secret messages on a white piece of paper for the recipient to paint over and reveal.

What’s one beauty product you can absolutely not live without?
I’m obsessed with Salt Store’s ‘Island Vibes’ face and body scrub – it’s literally good enough to eat, and makes my skin feel amazing.

What’s next?
I’m writing this from England, but as soon as I get back to Australia in a couple of weeks I’ll be preparing for a 3 day event with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia called ‘Wired for Wonder’ – I’m their Resident Artist for the event and am so excited to create a big interactive art installation and meet all the amazing speakers, story tellers, and attendees.
I’m also working on some big and exciting changes for Penheartspaper, but you’ll have to stay tuned for that!
